Stories That Live is a holocaust story telling fellowship that I was honored to work on branding and web design. My research for this project led me to the Bauhaus art school in Germany who’s teachers and students were persecuted by the nazis. Their modern views on art and design were in contrast with the nazis who, entrenched in western exceptionalism, believed the height of beauty was Greek Classicism.
Design That Endured
Below is an early concept presentation for the project that highlights a few of the teachers and students who were imprisoned by the nazis. Those that escaped were spread throughout the world, and the places that they settled became centers for modern design. Their collective style became known as the International Style for architecture and the International Typographic Style for graphic design. These styles live at the heart of what we now call modern design.
